What to Expect with Birth Doula Care

During Pregnancy
Once you hire me as your birth doula, I am officially yours! I am available to you by phone, text, or email 24/7. It’s important to me that you feel fully supported throughout your pregnancy. We will meet in your home twice to prepare for your birth. The first visit will focus on informational and educational support, while the second will emphasize comfort measures, positional work, and techniques to help cope with labor. Together, we will talk about your hopes and expectations for your birth, discuss medical interventions and review evidence-based research, craft a birth plan, and prepare for the postpartum period. We make sure that you are fully prepared and supported for your labor!

During Labor
Once your labor has begun and you feel that you are ready for the extra level of support, I will join you either at your home or the hospital/birth center. I will be there to support you throughout the entirety of your labor. Whether you labor for 6 hours or 36 hours, I will be by your side until your baby is in your arms! Once your baby is born, I am available to assist with skin-to-skin and initial breastfeeding or bottle-feeding support. I am also happy to step back and take some photos of your first moments together. Once you feel ready (usually after an hour or two), I will leave you to enjoy your newly expanded family.

After Birth
I will be readily available in the days following your birth to answer any questions and provide resources to ensure that you have the support you need as you settle in with your new little one. Within the first few weeks, we will schedule our postpartum follow-up visit. I will come to your home to check in, make sure you have everything you need, and provide an opportunity to process your birth experience together. We will also have plenty of time to marvel at your newborn and all you have accomplished!

"Emily was such an enormous part of the reason that my labor and delivery experience ended up being so positive and magical. I felt incredibly supported, informed, and empowered the whole time. Her presence and knowledge made me feel safe and protected, despite the obvious pain of labor. Her wisdom, strength, compassion and generosity with time and attention have been such a gift to my new family. I can’t recommend her enough!"

- Trish

"During my labor, Emily was amazingly in tune to my pain and was able to assist in positions she knew that would minimize and distract me during each contraction. She was super supportive and helped advocate for my VBAC natural birth plan. My pregnancy and labor were both high-risk and Emily was on board in every way possible to support me emotionally and physically during my labor and during the post-partum period. My husband and I are super thankful for Emily and the wonderful support and care she provided for our family!"

"I wasn't sure what type birth I wanted to have and rather than help me decide, Emily helped give me the piece of mind to be happy and comfortable with any potential outcome. I ended up having an incredible natural birth that I will forever cherish the memory of. Emily and my husband worked beautifully as a team and were so supportive of me throughout my labor. I can't say enough about Emily and will certainly be working with her when it's time for baby #2!"

- Lydia

"When we first met Emily we knew she was meant to be part of our birth story.  Not only did she know other members of my family, but they eagerly shared that they thought she was wonderful. Emily instilled us with confidence that she was a great fit and would help in every way possible. I labored for a VERY long time, and Emily was there along the entire journey as a great source of support.  She helped make sure I was comfortable, helped us make informed decisions, inspired confidence with out choices, and supported us as a family. Also, thanks to Emily we have great photos of the delivery! I’m glad that she was the 2nd person to meet our son – we consider her extended family."

"I honestly can’t say enough great things about Emily, and there’s no way I would have made it through my long and painful labor without her. I don’t think my husband would have been able to support me all by himself, especially given that I was in labor for 76 hours! It was truly a team effort between my husband and Emily for each and every contraction. I love that Emily was kind and gentle and completely amendable to my (changing) needs. I would have felt pretty lost, alone, and scared without Emily’s support. I will absolutely be hiring her when we have our next child!"
